A depressed* Girl’s Guide to eating

Easy recipes for when you're depressed

Quick and easy recipes for when you really don’t feel like eating

* If your mental health makes it hard for you to eat sometimes, this page is for you. We don’t discriminate based on symptoms. However, this guide isn’t targeted toward those working through disordered eating.

Sometimes when you’re especially anxious or depressed about something specific, or just general overwhelming feelings, eating can be hard. Food might not sound good at all. Or it might be hard to find the motivation to make something. This post will be a weekly series with tips and tricks to help you put food in your body.

Other than sleep, I see food as the most important factor in determining how your body AND mind will feel that day. Let’s make that a bit easier.

Though there are many, many ways we can feel on a given day, for this series, I’m going to have three levels of recipes, basically how much are you feeling up to making. How depressed is this depression meal. This week is eating something using any cheese you may have in the house.

Let’s go.

If you’re feeling like getting out of a ball is hard: Cheese and Cracker Sandwich

  • To make: Take any kind of cracker and string cheese. Break the string cheese into chunks with your hand and smush it between two crackers. Requires no dishes and tastes great on the couch.

If you’re feeling meh: Toaster Oven Grilled Cheese

  • To make: take two slices of any bread you have in the house and rip or cut any cheese you have into shreds. Place the shreds on the bread and put them on a baking sheet. Toast for the standard amount of time to toast bread. Take the slices out and (if you’ve got my 5 essential spices in your cabinet) top with some crushed red pepper flakes and/ or garlic powder. Smush the slices together and eat. (If you don’t have a toaster oven, this can be done dry in a pan.) Can be eaten on a paper towel- almost no clean up.

If you’re feeling pretty ok: Cheesy Eggs with Toast

  • To make: Toast a slice of bread. Take out a skillet place it on the stove with the stove turned to medium low. Melt a medium sized chunk of butter in the skillet (you can also use a small glug of oil). Crack two eggs in a bowl and mix them with a fork until they look uniform. About 45 seconds. Add a pinch of salt. Pour the mixture into the pan and let it sit for 30 seconds before starting to scramble with a spatula. Push the eggs toward the center from the sides with your spatula until they start to combine and look less wet. Mix in what ever cheese you have until it looks like it’s mixed throughout. Pour the eggs on top of the toast and add pepper on top of the eggs.
